About IRON MAN BRETT FAVRE. He also led the Packers to two Super Bowl appearances, following the 1996 and 1997 seasons. At the time of his retirement in 2008, Favre held a number of NFL records, including most touchdown passes (442), career passing yards (61,655), and career completions (5,377). He also held the record for most victories as a starting quarterback (160). Born in Gulfport, Mississippi, Brett Lorenzo Favre grew up in Kiln, Mississippi where he played baseball and football. Favre started for the Hancock North Central baseball team as an eighthgrader and earned five varsity letters. In football he played quarterback, lineman, strong safety, placekicker and punter in a primarily option, run-oriented offense coached by his father, Irvin Farve. Irvin Favr said he knew his son had a great arm but also knew that the school was blessed with good running backs. As a result, in the three years Brett was on the team, his father ran a run-oriented offense called the wishbone. Favre rarely threw more than five passes in a game. Farve attended the USM University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg. As a collegian in 1990 he was involved in a serious automobile accident, but a month later he paced his team to a victory over the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. The Atlanta Falcons selected Favre in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft. He played in only two games as a rookie in 1991 and was then traded to the Green Bay Packers. In the third game of the 1992 season, Favre filled in for injured Packers quarterback Don Majkowski; he performed so well that he won the starting job for the remainder of the season. He set a team record by completing 64.1 percent of his passes. In 1993 Favre led the National Football Conference (NFC) with 318 completions, and in 1994 he finished second in the balloting for player of the year. He led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys after the 1995 campaign, and for his performance that season he was voted most valuable player by the Associated Press. Favre threw 33 touchdown passes in 1994 and 38 in 1995only the fifth time in NFL history that a quarterback threw at least 30 touchdowns in consecutive seasons. Favre was again voted most valuable player in 1996 with 39 touchdown passes, and he led the Packers to a Super Bowl XXXI victory over the New England Patriots. He turned in another outstanding performance during the 1997 season; his 35 touchdown passes made him the only quarterback in NFL history to throw 30 or more touchdown passes in four consecutive seasons. This helped him earn yet another most valuable player award along with Barry Sanders. Favre also led Green Bay to the NFC championship, but the Packers lost to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII, 31-24. In September 2007 Favre surpassed Miami Dolphin Dan Marino for most touchdown passes in a career and passed Denver Bronco John Elway for victories. His 421st touchdown pass to Greg Jennings to set the record came in a game against the Minnesota Vikings. Favre led the Packers to the National Conference title game after the 2007 season but the team lost to the New York Giants at Lambeau Field. In March 2008 Favre announced his retirement from the National Football League. In August 2008, Brett unretired and the GB Packers traded him to the NY Jets, where he recently passed for 6 touchdowns in week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals and beat the undefeated Tennessee Titans. In 2009, Favre led the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship Game. A true pro who continues to perform at a high level at age 34. Three-time Pro Bowl selection enters the 2009 campaign needing just 19 catches to surpass Sterling Sharpe (595) for the team record for career receptions. With 7,989 receiving yards, trails just Don Hutson (7,991), Sharpe (8,134) and James Lofton (9,656) in franchise annals. Sits atop the Lambeau Field record book for receptions and receiving yardage. Became all-time leader in receiving yards at Lambeau in 2008 with 24-yard grab in Week 7 vs. Indianapolis, surpassing Antonio Freemans record of 3,477, and currently has 3,823. Surpassed Freeman (213) in 07 in Week 3 for the stadium record for receptions, and currently has 273 catches at Lambeau. Enters season with a streak of 111 games with at least one reception (116 including postseason), the longest streak in franchise history after surpassing Sharpes team record of 103 in Week 9 at Tennessee last season. Set a team record in 2008 with his sixth 1,000-yard season, surpassing Sharpe and Lofton, and extended his franchise record with his fifth straight. Joins Indianapolis Reggie Wayne as the only receivers in the league to have five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 2004-08. Teamed with Greg Jennings in 08 as each went over the 1,000-yard receiving mark, only the fourth time in team history that a receiving duo accomplished that feat; Driver and teammate Javon Walker each topped 1,000 yards in 04. Has caught 50 or more passes in a season seven times, matching Lofton and Sharpe for the team record. Surpassed 70 receptions in 08 for the fifth straight season. Posted six receptions of 40-plus yards in 2008, a career high. Is tied for sixth in franchise history with Billy Howton with 43 TD receptions; 36 of those came from Brett Favre, putting Favre and Driver third among Green Bay touchdown combinations. Needs four more TD catches to equal No. 3 Hutson on the teams all-time list. With touchdown grab vs. Atlanta in Week 5 in 08, became only the eighth player in team history to reach 40 career, joining Hutson (99), Sharpe (65), Freeman (57), Max McGee (50), Lofton (49), Howton (43) and Boyd Dowler (40). Has 20 career 100-yard games, which ties him with Freeman for fourth in team history. Despite catching only two touchdowns in 07, was duly recognized by NFC players and coaches as one of the conferences top wideouts and earned his third Pro Bowl trip (2002 and 2006 were the others). Set personal highs in receptions and yards three straight years beginning in 2004, putting up 92 catches for 1,295 yards in 2006 to earn a second Pro Bowl appearance. Those totals ranked third and second in the NFC, respectively; both were fifth in the NFL in 2006, and his career-high 191-yard performance at Minnesota Nov. 12 was the best single-game total by an NFC. Receiver on the season. Wants to play until hes 40, and he just may do that with the tremendous care he takes of his body. Sets an example for the teams younger receivers, both on the field and off, of what it takes to be successful, and credits predecessors Freeman and Robert Brooks for helping him develop his leadership skills. His knowledge of the West Coast offensive system, combined with his athleticism as a former college track standout and one-time Olympic hopeful, makes him a threat no matter where he lines up on the field.
